Late Poems
Alfonsina Storni
Translated by C. Violet Eaton and Emily Eaton
forthcoming 2025
Alfonsina Storni was a major figure who achieved both popular and critical success at a time when Latin American literature was still dominated by men. Born in Switzerland in 1892 and raised in Argentina, she began to write poetry at age twelve despite having very little formal education. Her first collection, La inquietud del rosal, was published in 1916: she would go on to publish eight books of poetry and three plays, eventually receiving recognition in both Argentina and Europe. Scholars typically regard Storni’s fifth collection Ocre (1925) as a bridge between her early work, with its vestiges of Modernism and Romanticism, and her later work, which is characterized by avant-garde experimentation. She took her own life in 1938 after continued complications from breast cancer.
C. Violet Eaton is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at Boise State University, and the author of two full-length books of poetry: Quartet (Ahsahta, 2018), and Some Habits (Omnidawn, 2015).
Emily Eaton holds a Ph.D. in Romance Studies from Cornell University and is currently pursuing a degree in speech-language pathology. She is a volunteer translator for The Immigration Project, a nonprofit organization that provides legal services to immigrants in central and southern Illinois. This is her second collaboration with C. Violet Eaton published by Free Poetry Press.
